Successful launch of the Renfrewshire Trusted Trader scheme in East Renfrewshire.
Monday, 31st March 2014
Rogue traders will be feeling the heat in future following the successful launch of the Renfrewshire Trusted Trader scheme in East Renfrewshire.
The scheme aims to help members of the public choose a reliable trader who has been vetted by Trading Standards officers and protect customers from conmen.
It was set up by Renfrewshire Council's Trading Standards team and a joint working agreement between the councils has now extended the scheme to cover East Renfrewshire traders and residents.
The launched took place on Monday at The Avenue shopping centre and more than 500 local residents received a range of promotional information packs and "No Cold Calling" stickers from Trading Standards staff and local police.
East Renfrewshire Council's Senior Trading Standards Officer Paul Holland said: "We will continue to work in partnership with Police Scotland, the Adult Protection Committee and Community safety to protect local residents from cowardly fraudsters. They seek out our most vulnerable residents and attempt to extort thousands of pounds via doorstep and telephone based scams.
"Property maintenance scams are a particular concern. The extension of the Renfrewshire Trusted Trader scheme in East Renfrewshire aims to give our residents confidence when they are looking for a tradesman. Never employ a "cold caller" who turns up at your doorstep offering to do cheap repairs. You will almost certainly be ripped off. Ring and Report them on 0800 0130076."
Information on the scheme is available online and in council buildings.
Convener for Environment, Councillor Vincent Waters said: "I think it's a major step in frustrating the rogue traders who target our vulnerable residents and a classic example of joint working between two authorities.
"We are extremely happy with the support we are receiving from the local banks and also the local people to help target this on-going issue."
Residents and traders interested in the scheme should call 0300 300 0380 or visit the Trusted Traders website.
